Failed To Connect or Random Disconnects
If you only care about playing the game, you can go into Dolphin.ini (by default, located in My Documents/Dolphin Emulator/Config) and either changing (or if it doesn't exist creating under Core) MMU = false. That will restore the old behavior of letting the erroneously access memory it shouldn't without triggering a DSI. Project+ is a balance patch for Project M, a popular Super Smash Bros. - You and your opponent must use the same version of Dolphin or FM.
- If you're on university internet, or any internet you do not pay for personally (including some apartments), then your ports are being limited and netplay needs ports to be open in order for it to work. There is no work-around for this if you don't have access to router settings. You can however still connect with users who HAVE port forwarded (and are using Direct Connect).
- Try to change/disable one/all of the following:
- - Antivirus/Computer Firewall: Make sure you go into whatever software you are using on your computer and create a security exception for dolphin to have FULL INTERNET ACCESS or Open to all devices and make sure you SAVE your settings (this is just an example. Results may vary):
- - Modem/Router: Besides swapping to a new router, you can also try to open port 2626. see PortForward.com's Router List. If that also fails try following the Direct IP Guide Here.
Lag and dropping frames (Online Only)
If you can run Melee or PM at a constant 60 frames per second offline (playing on your own, without being connected to anybody) but find yourself constantly dropping below 60fps while playing online, you will most likely be experiencing one of the following issues. These issues will be split into two lists; a list of problems that can be solved easily and a list of problems considerably more difficult to solve, with all points being listed in order of complexity.
Solvable Issues
Misconfigured Buffer. For Dolphin 5.0-321 and Faster Melee 4.4 buffer is calculated by taking the ping (ms of delay) between you and your opponent and diving it by 8 (1 buffer for every 8 ms). Ensure your buffer is correctly set. (A little trick to differentiate Network framedrops and computer issues would be to turn the buffer up as high as possible. If you maintain 60fps at lets say 20 buffer, then the issue would be someone's network, whereas if you do not maintain a steady 60fps, then the issue would be someone's computer.)
Secondary Network Traffic (eg. Downloads, Youtube, applications such as Steam or Battle.net). Having other programs open that are particularly bandwidth heavy or make traffic requests may result in lag when playing against other people. Close all non-essentials programs of this type and, ideally, get others in your home to do the same.
Secondary Internal Application Traffic (Steam, f.lux, Rainmeter, antivirus, performance software). Open your task manager and close any programs with high CPU/RAM usage.
Deeper Issues
ISP Compatibility Issues. Some ISPs will never have required throughput to each other. For example, people using Virgin Media may only be able to host games and are not able to join others' lobbies. This problem may also be caused by your router, rather than your ISP, being unable to sustain the necessary throughput.
Physical Hardware Issues. A bad network card, failing hard drive, touchy ram, bad board controllers, or heat on your CPU, GPU, or network card
Network Interface Issues. This would require person-to-person interaction to be explained.
Other Things To Note
High download/upload speeds do not guarantee a smooth netplay experience. Most ISPs send you a bunch of books spaced at longer intervals, whereas Dolphin needs a constant stream of small envelopes to function fully.
If you get a ping spike every 4, 5, 8, or 10 seconds predictably its a scheduled dialout on router or computer side. Close all programs and see if it still happens.
If you spike randomly: disconnect devices (phones, tablets etc.) from wireless if possible or applicable and stop secondary net use.
If you spike and there's absolutely nothing else going on its probably inherent to your modem router or ISP. At this point you will have to set the buffer higher than usual in order to compensate.

I can play Project M/Brawl fine when it's offline but when I try to use netplay to play with others online the screen goes black as soon as the game starts.
Me and a friend are trying to play Wii Sports using NetPlay, using actual Wii Remotes connected to our computers via wireless bluetooth.
We have been trying things all day and to no avail. I can spress A/Start and go into PM startup screen. Go to the GFX plugin option and switch between the shaders! One is using a standard controller and another is using a wiiu adapter for gamecube. For whatever reason, when I start up the NetPlay game, the real Wii Remotes disconnect and opt for an emulated control scheme, instead. We have tried setting the 'enable dual core' to off in our config to no avail. Project M is the premier Brawl modification inspired by Super Smash Bros. Melee's gameplay designed to add rich, technical gameplay to a balanced cast of characters whilst further enhancing the speed of play. Also, Netplay is more used to emulate local multiplayer so I don't think you should be trying to play through 'Online Game' on the main menu. Then run the PM ISO through dolphin. (This differs from using NetPlay with GameCube controllers) Have both peers set both Wii Remote 1 and 2 source to 'Emulated'?
My friend and I are attempting to play some various GameCube games over NetPlay (using the traversal server) and we can connect to lobbies just fine. We tried that and its still a black screen on both of our ends but the remotes now at least say their player via the lights at the bottom It just says that there are wiimotes connected when I quit netplay. Has the NetPlay host assigned the Wii Remote slots in the NetPlay 'lobby'? If I try to exit the program, it will freeze and I need to force quit it. Noes: I have SSBB as default ISO. Games are the exact same copy. Differences in gecko codes do cause the desync prompt in netplay, but the code has been crafted to sync even though it reports desync. I got the netplay running now with the ISO. Anyway I was attempting to try multiplayer with a friend and we received a pretty consistent black screen that ultimately locked up dolphin. Dolphin 5.0 does not support Wii remotes in netplay. (This differs from using NetPlay with GameCube controllers). If anyone has any information I would greatly appreciate it. Some games on dolphin has bad graphical glitches but there is a easy way to fix some of them! So I updated my old Dolphin 4.0-5something to the netplay version found here: http://www.smashladder.com/help/windows. Try changing to pixel shader 2.0 and to 'no shaders'! Clicking on the screen just makes it freeze up and prompts me to just close it. So, after this update I cannot launch Gecko OS anymore. Netplay is a defining feature of Dolphin: it allows you to set up online sessions for any GameCube or Wii title with a local multiplayer mode, without the problems or limitations of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection or hassle of the BBA.It is improving regularly, and GameCube Netplay should be painless. These codes are found: Right Click your Melee ISO in dolphin > Properties > Gecko Codes: Dolphin will still report a false positive desync if you have different codes checked but most likely, you can ignore it.
If it is of any help, when we quit netplay and let the game start up on its own right after it displays 'Wiimote 1 disconnected' all the way to 'Wiimote 4 disconnected'. Hey all, I'm new to Netplay & Dolphin in general so be nice. I was testing it out on Kirby's Air Ride and the game ran perfectly at 60fps with minor minor audio problems. Running games in a netplay lobby, but with only one person works, but if we attempt to start the netplay with two or more people the game doesn't start (and goes black for the host).

One player will configure remote 1, the other will configure remote 2, both must be enabled. You need to use the ISO builder and put Brawl in the same directory to build a PM ISO. Any ideas or suggestions on what is happening?
